2019 - 2020 Syllabus – Graphic Design & Illustration 1 & 2
Syllabus – Graphic Design & Illustration 1 & 2
By enrolling in a Graphic Design course at Oak Ridge, you have accepted the challenges of a fun and rigorous elective course.
What is Graphic Design
“Graphic design, also known as communication design, is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with visual and textual content. The form it takes can be physical or virtual and can include images, words, or graphics.” (AIGA)
Students will be able to employ problem solving skills, adapt to the needs of internal/external users and understand the impact color/text can have on the effectiveness of a design.
Students and parents must realize that if a student does not understand a concept or lesson it is his/her responsibility to come in for tutoring during Eagles Nest, during tutorial time or by appointment.
Teaching Strategies
My course features a mixture of lecture, instructional videos, guided practice and hands on student activities. Students utilize my classroom website. All course resources will be posted to my website with limited information on my Canvas page.

Grading
Graphic Design & Illustration 1
Daily grades (30%): Daily grades will include all grades that are not major grades. This includes chapter quizzes, tutorials, progress checks and lessons. Each unit will include at least two or more quizzes. Make-up quizzes may be completed before/after school or during Eagle’s Nest. Lessons will include such activities as tutorials, warm-ups, sketches or assignments that are competed out-side of normal classroom time. We will have nine or more Daily Grades per nine-weeks.
Major grade (70%): Projects, tests, and portfolios. Students will have three or more Major Grades per nine-weeks. Exams will be at the end of Spring and Fall semesters. The Midterm and Final Exams will be comprehensive. Tests and Exams will contain two components: multiple choice, true/false and matching questions (50% of test grade) which will include vocabulary, historical events/people, program tools/shortcuts and information from lecture and our textbook. (Performance; 50% of test grade) students will use the software to create in-class designs that will test their understanding of the design process and the use of the software.
Graphic Design & Illustration 2
Daily grades (30%): Daily grades will include all grades that are not Major Grades. Lessons will include such activities as tutorials, warm-ups, sketches or assignments that are competed out-side of normal classroom time. We will have eight-teen or more Daily Grades per nine-weeks.
Major grade (70%): Projects, Labs and portfolios. Students will have five or more projects per nine-weeks. Exams will be at the end of Spring and Fall semesters. The Midterm and Final Exams will consist of long term projects both individual and group assignments. These projects may also include research, presentation, labs or sketchbook components. We will have six or more Major Grades per nine-weeks.
Deductions will be as follows: Days Late/Points Deducted/Highest Grade, 1/10/90, 2/20/80, 3/30/70, 4+/ 50/50. After one week the assignment/project will be counted as a zero, without any further extension. It is important to not that days late does not mean the class period students are with me. For example, if a student comes to class on a red day, the next blue day would count toward days late.
Absences A student has the same number of days to make up work as they are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to find out about missed work so that work can be submitted within the designated time limit.
Classroom Expectations
Classroom rules are in place to assure that my classroom always remains a positive, safe and productive environment for all students.
They are as follows:
Respect: Respectful of classmates, technology and the teacher. You may not like someone, but we all are deserving of respect.
Punctuality: On to class on time, be ready to start on time, turn in assignments on time, and do not pack up before the bell rings.
Maturity: Exercise self-control during class. Do not use profanity or electronic devices during class. Use your time wisely to complete all assigned work and turn it in on time.
Best work: I expect every student to do their best, on each assignment no expectations! I strive to produce my best work each day and so should you.
Required Materials Bring these materials to class every day:
· A notebook or binder with paper to write/take notes
· Blue or black pen
· Sharpened pencil
· Sketchbook 3.5-inch x 5 inch or larger, 50 pages or greater
Electronic Policy Classroom Use of electronic devices is subject to regulation by the teacher on days where a student’s electronic devices will not be needed during the class period.
Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism is Academic Dishonesty. Plagiarism is defined as “Taking someone else's work and/or ideas and passing them off as one's own.”
This includes but is not limited to:
· Copy someone else’s project
· Copy an image off the Internet (or any other source)
· Copy any part of a design that you did not create
· Pay someone to create something for you, whether a friend or from the Internet
· Put your name on someone else’s work (for free or for money)
My classroom has a Zero Tolerance Policy for Plagiarism for any student on any assignment
If a student is found to have plagiarized an assignment they will be given an automatic zero on the assignment and will be subject to disciplinary action.
Conference Period My conference time is during 7th period on red day and during 4th period on blue day. I will be available to meet with parents or answer any questions over the phone or through email.

● Courses – This tab contains all the information related to the courses I am teaching this year. In this section you will find lessons, projects, videos, vocabulary, a link to our textbook, review materials. Links to the class Share Drive allow students to turn assignment both in class and at home.
● Student Work – These galleries contain student work from the current and previous years.
● Instructor – This tab contains information about me and examples of my work.
Please feel free to contact me at any time by phone or through e-mail. I look forward to working with both you and your student toward a successful 2019-2020 school year.
